The ruins of Choquequirao are larger than Machupicchu, but they are currently a hidden gem and are not easily accessible to visitors. A tram will be built soon and this will become as popular as Machupicchu.

Itinerary

DAY 1: CUSCO – CACHORA – CHIKISKA

A scenic bus ride in the morning of approximately four hours through the high Andean plains will take us to the town of Cachora, where we will meet our mule drivers. Upon leaving the village, we will begin with a gentle walk along an old mining road to the Kapulyoq Pass (2800 meters / 9,240 feet). From this step we will have our first fascinating view of the deep Apurimac canyon and the surrounding snowy peaks. After resting and enjoying the scenery, we will continue our descent of approximately three hours along a dusty path, zigzagging through the arid canyon wall, to our first camp in the Chiquiska oasis (1800 meters / 6000 feet).

DAY 2: CHIKISKA – CHOQUEQUIRAO

After a nutritious breakfast we will continue our descent to the bottom of the valley, where we will cross the Apurimac River (1495 meters / 5000 feet). From here we will begin to climb the long and steep path (approximately five hours) to our destination: the impressive archaeological complex of Choquequirao, where we must arrive just in time to enjoy an impressive sunset over the deep canyon and the surrounding mountains (3000 meters / 9,900 feet).

DAY 3:  CHOQUEQUIRAO

During the morning we will visit the restored section of Choquequirao and explore some of the ruins that are still covered by lush cloud forest vegetation. Much work has been done in recent years to excavate, clean and restore the site. After lunch, those who decide to visit the (restored buildings and terraces about 300 meters (1000 feet) below the main structures of Choquequirao). Later, our dinner will consist of a typical Peruvian “pachamanca” (traditional Andean ingredients cooked on earth). Volunteers to help with the preparation will be welcome! From the highest point of the archaeological site (ceremonial platform) there are beautiful views of the Apurimac canyon far below, and if we are lucky, we can even see the great Andean condor flying over us.

DAY 4: CHIQUISKA – COCAMAZA

After breakfast and one last chance to independently explore the main structures of the archeological site, it will be time to start the long descent to the Apurimac River, where we will stop for lunch and rest, before the three hours of ascent to our Last camp In Cocamazana (2300 meters / 7,600 feet). On our last night together, we will enjoy an excellent meal with spectacular views of the Choquequirao ruins and the Apurimac Canyon

DAY 5: COCAMAZA – CACHORA – CUSCO

To avoid the intense sun, we will start our day early with the ascent to the Kapulyoq Pass (2800 meters / 9,250 feet), from where we will continue on a flat road to the town of Cachora, arriving before noon.
After a well-deserved rest, we will say goodbye to the mule drivers and begin our return trip by bus to Cusco. If there is time, on the way we will stop and visit Saywite, a huge rock carved by the Incas in a three-dimensional representation of their empire, complete with flora and fauna. We will arrive in Cusco ready to take a shower.
